I can't tell you how many times a client has sat down in my chair for a hair service, and brings out a picture of a Victoria's Secret model. "I want my hair to look like this," she'll say. Generally, I put my hand up to block out the model's face and body and explain that a fan won't be blowing her hair around in real life, and I'll need to put in a few hundred dollars worth of extensions. Why? Well Victoria's Secret is widely known for having some of the most beautiful models who also happen to have great heads of hair. Victoria's Secret has has become a mark of a supermodel, and whether we like it or not, they just aren't made like the rest of us.
VS model Erin Heatherton is no exception either. Her legs are a mile long, hair perfectly tousled and she has a pout to kill. She was here in Milwaukee at Mayfair Mall's newly renovated Victoria's Secret on the U.S of Angels Summer Swim Tour. I went to see if she had any beauty tips for those of us who didn't win the genetic jackpot.
Fashionista: What are your beauty must-haves during a shoot?
Erin Heatherton: Lip balm, an eyelash curler and body oil. (Coconut oil is my favorite.)
F: What was the most exciting place you've had a photo shoot for Victoria's Secret?
EH: Saint Barth's was one of my favorites. It was one of the first places VS took me, so I'm very nostalgic about it. It was very glamorous. Prague was amazing too; it was very romantic and the sets they build for us are just amazing. But the most special place for me is Chicago - [we shot there] for one our our Body commercials It was shot on a bridge that I saw all the time growing up. It had a very home-y vibe because I grew up here in the Midwest.
(Heatherton was born and raised in Skokie, Ill.)
F: What is your favorite swimsuit this year?
EH: I really love the Very Sexy Bandeau (Ed note: at left). You can untie it so you don't have a tan line. It also gives you a very sexy shape. They take the technology from their bra's and apply it to the swimsuits.
F: What is it like backstage at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show?
EH: Every year it's a little different depending on who's preforming. There are a lot of things going on. The more I do it, the less I'm concerned about the hair and makeup and more aware of what the musical performers are wearing, and just enjoying it. I always feel bad for the new models that are there because it is so crazy and they are probably terrified.
F: Even though you're essentially flawless, we all have insecurities. Do you have any?
EH: Everyone has them, and I think once you realize that you just have to embrace the things you love about yourself. Once you do that, the things you love become far more important than what you don't. People want you to shine. No one wants to be around someone down on themselves.
F: Can you share a beauty tip with readers?
EH: Coconut oil. It's great for your hair and skin. I was blow drying my hair in the kitchen and I just tried it one day. You know how you can be unsure of the product in your hair getting on your skin? I love not worrying about that with coconut oil.
F: Most embarrassing thing that happened on a shoot?
EH: Embarrassing is just part of the job. I'm so numb to embarrassing situations because they happen all the time. Every day is embarrassing - I'm parading around in my underwear!
And with that we said our goodbyes.
