Nelson Mandela Day
The South African leader's birthday celebrations stretch to Milwaukee.
Amidst reports that his condition is steadily improving, Nelson Mandela is celebrating his 95th birthday today. And while South Africans are serenading Mandela outside Pretoria Heart Hospital, where the anti-apartheid leader is recovering from a lung infection, Milwaukeeans can take part in "International Nelson Madela Day." Beginning at noon in the Milwaukee Public Library's Centennial Hall (733 N. 8th St.), Alderman Joe Davis, Sr., the South African Honorary Consul for Wisconsin, will host a free event featuring a screening of the biography Mandela as well as various speakers, including Mayor Tom Barrett. Even if you aren't able to visit the library on your lunch hour, you can mark the occassion by volunteering 67 minutes to a good cause (as many the world over are doing) to mark Mandela's 67 years of public service.
