Say What?
In the mixture of partisan and nonpartisan offices that makes up local politics, one factor towers above the rest: personality.

In a sound-bite-consumed society fueled by 24-hour news, some politicians have determined that whoever shouts the loudest or combines the most sensational adjectives (see: Sheriff David Clarke) seizes the day. Yet other local politicos remain judicious and deliberate, projecting an air of sanity, while a few manage to speak softly and carry a big stick. We’ve got all styles here, where many local offices, as required by state law, are nonpartisan. And personality is paramount – the fearlessly rational, the emotionally fearless, the rationally cautious. It’s politics on another dimension.
