The Week Not In Summerfest
For all of your non-Fest entertainment needs
The Big Gig is almost upon us. And though there will be plenty of music filling the Milwaukee summer air over these next two weeks, the vast majority of it will be pouring over from the Lakefront. Milwaukee’s live music clubs generally tend to lay low during Summerfest, but there’s still plenty of good stuff going on if you require some non-Fest-related entertainment.

And be sure to check out Music Notes throughout the next two weeks for daily postings on all things Summerfest.

Tuesday, June 26: Sleepcomesdown with KASH (Italy) and The Fucking Hotlights (NY) @ Cactus Club, 9 p.m.

Sleepcomesdown is one of the best bands in Milwaukee when it comes to partnering with great out of state bands to give us a taste of what's happening around the country. And this event broadens those horizons across the pond as the Cactus Club welcomes Italian math/noise rockers Kash. The band's impressive latest album Full Of, helped in no small part by the expert engineering of Steve Albini, is a clinic in dissonant musicality and dynamic range, switching on a dime from subdued composure to frantic riff-making. Wednesday, June 27: Evan Christian @ The Jazz Estate, 10 p.m.

With the throngs of Chicagoans and Rascal Flatts fans flooding The Big Gig tonight, why not take the opportunity to mellow out with a Milwaukee staple? Evan Christian Jazz Quartet holds court at The Jazz Estate every Wednesday, showcasing the endlessly talented musician's flamenco-soul guitar styles. It's either that or spend the night wedged between two fat, shirtless guys with cowboy hats. Your call. (2423 N. Murray Ave., jazzestate.com)

Thursday, June 28: Waxeater with Girl Fight, IfIHadAHiFi and Lamb's Legs @ Quarter's Rock 'N Roll Palace, 9 p.m.
Noise rockers IfIHadAHiFi are no strangers to the local scene, as the band has been spreading the loud, cacophonous love around these parts for more than a decade. Tonight they welcome Latest Flame Records label mates Waxeater from Bloomington, Ind., to share in the lo-fi hijinks. Waxeater is cut from the same garage-punk cloth as HiFi, but with a bit more of a hardcore edge. (900 E. Center St.)

Also: Royal Tin Foil with The Thriftones @ Riverwest Public House, 9 p.m.
(815 E. Locust St., RiverwestPublicHouse.wordpress.com)

Also: Peter J Woods with Lucky Bone, Reptile Worship and Dan Of Earth @ Cactus Club, 10 p.m.

(2496 S. Wentworth Ave., CactusClubMilwaukee.com)

Also: Jazz In The Park featuring D'Calleson @ Cathedral Square Park, 6 p.m.

Friday, June 29: Board Of Governors with RedBelt and Great Lake Drifters @ Club Garibaldi, 9 p.m.
As with most Summerfest weeks, the fest is not the only venue in town that gets bombarded with out-of-state talent. Chicago-based Board Of Governors decided to follow the rest of the city north to share some quality time with two of Milwaukee's own in RedBelt and Great Lake Drifters. These riff-driven rockers toe the line between '90s alternative and modern power-pop. (2501 S. Superior St., ClubGaribaldis.com)

Also: Trin Tran with Soup Moat, Apache Dropout, Drugs Dragons and Bongonya @ Borg Ward Collective, 8 p.m. ($6)
(823 W. National Ave., theborgward.org)

Also: Husker Dudes (Husker Du tribute) with Textbook Committee (Guided By Voices tribute) @ Cactus Club, 10 p.m.
(2496 S. Wentworth Ave., CactusClubMilwaukee.com)

Saturday, June 30: Castle Thunder with Coo Woo and Calliope @ Mad Planet, 9 p.m. ($7)
Though it's admittedly taken the band more than 18 months and three studios to complete, home grown Castle Thunder will be releasing its debut EP Wolf In Sheepskin Saturday at Mad Planet. And if the groovy, danceable single "The Observer" is any indication, we all might be best served by keeping our eyes on Castle Thunder in the coming months. Listen to the first single here. (533 E. Center St, Mad-Planet.net)

Also: Fahri with Muddy Udders and Fuck Knights @ Circle-A Cafe, 8 p.m.
(932 E. Chambers St., circle-a-cafe.org)

Also: Elder with Moon Curse and Ahab's Ghost @ Cactus Club, 10 p.m.
(2496 S. Wentworth Ave., CactusClubMilwaukee.com)

Also: Howling Brothers with Young Hines @ Club Garibaldi, 9 p.m. ($5)
(2501 S. Superior St., ClubGaribaldis.com)

Sunday, July 1: The Midwest Beat with Phill Reynolds @ Circle-A Cafe, 8 p.m.

One of the most steadfast bands in the local scene, The Midwest Beat just keeps cranking out show after show of upbeat, jangly '60s-inspired pop. And with the raw energy and well-rehearsed musicianship the band continuously pours out on stage, we hope the band keeps the prolific streak going well into the future. (932 E. Chambers St., circle-a-cafe.org)

Also: The Daredevil Christopher Wright with Midtown Dickens and Big Falls @ Cactus Club, 10 p.m.
