Marquette has the 9th best basketball fan base in the country, according to a new study from Emory Sports Marketing Analytics. In fancy terms, the study examines “Revenue Premium Based Brand Equity” and places Marquette’s fan base between Syracuse and Oklahoma State. Seems like some pretty good bragging rights are in store.
But before Golden Eagle fans start crafting ecstatic Facebook statuses, let us decode that Emory lingo for you. The analysts aren’t ranking which university has the best body-painted, banana costume-wearing fans – they’re letting us know that Marquette fans will still spend money on their team during seasons when it’s not playing so well (or if it loses to UW-Green Bay). The analysts say the study “avoids bandwagon effects and gets at the core loyal fan bases.” It makes sense, too, since the research was completed before this year’s NCAA Tournament, where Marquette advanced to the Elite Eight round, losing to Syracuse. Marquette’s brand loyalty is high – as was the number of Elite Eight T-shirt purchases at Marquette’s spirit shop.
But to the body-painted fans’ credit, the Golden Eagles’ student section was one of the 16 advancing to the semifinal round of the 2013 Naismith Student Section of the Year Award contest. Just Ring Out Ahoya already, Marquette.
