Lakefront Fish Fry Changes
The folks at Lakefront Brewery added an interesting twist to their Friday night fish fry. Lakefront now offers one “specialty beer” on Friday from 4 to 9:30 p.m. Last Friday, it was an IPA brewed with coffee beans. This Friday, the special brew is Imperial Stout with whiskey chips. The Lakefront fish fry is a popular event anyway. Getting the chance to try a rare brew makes it even more special.
The Great Session Pale Ale Taste Off
Last week Tom “Grynder” Ciula and his son Andrew sampled 11 “sessionable” (a.k.a., relatively low alcohol) IPAs. It’s important to note that Grynder is a certified beer judge and one of the most knowledgeable and passionate craft beer fans in the Milwaukee area. And it’s essential to point out that the duo tried these beers completely blind and rated each based on aroma and flavor. So, without further ado, here are the “medal winners” with a portion of Grynder’s analysis in quotes:
Gold Medal: New Glarus Moon Man. “It was indistinguishable from a top-grade, standard IPA. Full, rich, hop forward, yet plenty of malt aroma. Rich flavor. A little sweet and not very bitter.”
Silver Medal: Stone Go to IPA. “The most distinctive hop aroma and flavor in the contest. Had the longest staying power. The piney hop aroma and flavor never diminished.”
Bronze Medal: Boulevard Pop-Up IPA. “The five different hops used here wafted the most amazing aroma of the contest. It was the only perfect score of 5.0 I handed out for either aroma or flavor.”
So, there you have it. Keep these beers in mind when it comes to your summer drinking plans.
Last week, Badger State Brewing announced plans for a 20,000-square-foot expansion. Good luck to the brewery in Green Bay.
Barley Pop of the Week
The extended chill in the air this winter/spring has meant the season has been a good one for stouts. I’m a fan of the barrel aging done by Central Waters Brewing and appreciate all that they offer. The Bourbon Barrel Cherry Stout is an excellent choice for those looking for a fair amount of cherry flavor in a stout. The beer has a nice tart flavor rounded out by bourbon. I’m happy to have three more of these beauties in the fridge for the next cold spell.
