Beer Week Marches On
More events plus one snappy Three Floyds IPA and a Miller misstep.

Craft beer enthusiasts are in the thick of Milwaukee Beer Week. There are still plenty of events  until May 3 to attend. One of the most intriguing left on the schedule is a Hinterland tasting at Romans’ Pub (3475 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.) on Wednesday, April 30.

Try Hinterland Whiteout IIPA and barrel-aged Whiteout. Mike is serving artisanal brats and jumbo hot dogs to go along with the delicious beer. Get there at 6 p.m. and indulge.

Misfortune

Disclaimer: My job with this blog isn’t to disparage beers. I prefer craft brews but don’t want to be a beer snob and realize that people are allowed to drink whatever beer they want.

I have no problem with MillerCoors and, in fact, like an ice cold High Life on a hot summer day (ideally at Miller Park). But, Miller Fortune is another story. The problem isn’t that Miller tried to market a higher end beer with an elevated ABV (Fortune is 6.9%). The problem is the result. The malty sweetness isn’t pleasant and the complexity that I hoped for was nonexistent. It simply misses the mark. The beer has been disparaged by plenty of bloggers and beer geeks. But this take by (conspiracy theorist) Oliver Gray just might be the best.

Barley Pop of the Week

Three Floyds doesn’t slouch when it comes to IPAs or great beer names. War Mullet Imperial IPA is just another example. The brew balances malt, citrus and a nice substantial bitterness. War Mullet fits nicely into the Three Floyds hoppy portfolio.

Quick Taps

  • I hope all that attended Dark Lord Day at Three Floyds last Saturday had a good time and got home safely.
  • The Esquire story about how Boston Beer Company head honcho Jim Koch stays on an even keel while drinking went viral last week. I’m not entirely sure I buy the yeast theory.
  • I’m attending Beer Summit held by Beer Capitol on Thursday. Some big names in craft brewing will discuss the state of the industry. I hope to have some good nuggets next week.
