Theatrical trio pools Grand Avenue space
Efforts to redefine the Shops of Grand Avenue, Milwaukee's Downtown mall, are moving apace.
Three arts groups – Milwaukee Comedy Inc., which puts on the annual Milwaukee Comedy Festival, Pink Banana Theater Co., and Studio Kristelle – have announced plans to share 10,000 square feet of space on the ground floor of the mall's North Plankinton Avenue building, the easternmost within the complex. They'll pool marketing and other services but continue to operate independently, according to an announcement. Milwaukee Comedy and Pink Banana plan to use some of the space for rehearsals and performances.
The three are moving in under the "Creativity Works Here" initiative, which counts Art Milwaukee, Milwaukee Pulse, the Milwaukee Community Bicycle Project and Spreenkler Talent Labs among its other scores. Another, VETransfer (Veteran Entrepreneurial Transfer Inc.), has said it plans to vacate its Grand Avenue space by the end of this month. The nonprofit, funded by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, trains veterans who are founding or growing small businesses. The group is seeking more conventional office space.
