Discount Liquor is known for its amazing beer selection and I’m guessing the choices at Discount’s Crafts & Drafts Spring Beer Fest will be pretty awesome. The fest at Serb Hall (5101 W. Oklahoma Ave.) isn’t until April 14, but I’m telling you about it now because advance tickets go on sale this Friday (March 1) at both Discount Liquor locations (5031 W. Oklahoma Ave. and 919 N. Barstow Ave.). VIP tickets ($60 advance) seem to be the way to go. They give you early entry, access to a VIP area and a raffle entry to try a one-ounce sample of Sam Adams Utopias (24 lucky VIPs get to try the high-priced brew).
I’m as intrigued by Founders Brewing’s Doom as I’ve been by any beer for a while. The brew is what happens when the mad scientists at Founders put Double Trouble IIPA in bourbon barrels for a few months. I’m not sure what Doom is going to taste like, but it’s a safe bet that the flavor will be ridiculously big. Founders is releasing Doom at its brewery in Grand Rapids (Mich.) in a pre-ticketed six-day event that starts on Sunday, April 14. The “wide” release takes place in late April, and I’m going to do my best to track some down.
Barley Pop of the Week
Frigid temperatures outside have met their match in Sixpoint 3Beans. The delicious porter has big dark chocolate and coffee flavors, thanks to the use of cacao and coffee beans (the third bean used is the Romano bean). 3Beans has a boozy and deliciously bitter coffee finish. With a 10 percent ABV, this is a winter warmer for sure. Another winner from Sixpoint.
I made a trip to Romans’ Pub (3455 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.) with some of the Milwaukee Magazine crew last week. I’ve never had a bad time at Romans.
I’ve been trying the Mikkeller Single Hop series beers when I find them. They’re good, but I’m not sure they’re five or six bucks per bottle good.
