A New Year for New Music
Kick off 2014 with some great local shows.

Thursday, Jan. 2: Avenues with Lights Over Bridgeport and Lost Years (StayPosi Records showcase) @ Frank's Power Plant, 9 p.m.

StayPosi Records has an interesting business model. Along with releasing records by small independent artists, it puts a portion of its sales towards charity. Frank's will showcase three of its bands, including Milwaukee pop-punks Avenues, fresh off the release of holiday Christmas single "Punk Rock Christmas."

Friday, Jan. 3: Myles Coyne & The Rusty Nickel Band w/ Caley Conway & The Lucy Cukes, Ugly Brothers, Jamie Yanda and The Lousy Trouts @ Linneman's, 9 p.m.

Milwaukee's Breadking Collective has grown so large over the past year that it now has the firepower to occupy an entire night at Linneman's. The showcase celebrating the collective's "folk half" (Breadfest in June focused on punk bands) features three full-band performances and two solo sets, including music from Myles Coyne, Caley Conway and Ugly Brothers. To accommodate the whole gang, this one starts with solo sets at 9 sharp.

Also: Blax with Higher Education Records and DJ Max Holiday @ Cactus Club, 10 p.m.

And: From the Stage to the Booth DJ Series: AUTOmatic (Presented by Dope Folks Records) @ Blackbird Bar, 10 p.m.

Saturday, Jan. 4: The Fatty Acids with Fable & The World Flat and Dogs In Ecstasy @ Cactus Club, 9:30 p.m.

The tireless Fatty Acids headline a great lineup of locals Saturday at Cactus Club. By now you've probably already heard about their ridiculously good album Bolero, which made its way onto pretty much every local year-end list. Fable & The World Flat and Dogs In Ecstasy both released amazing albums this year as well (all three bands made our list, making this a must-see show for local music buffs.

Also: Castle Thunder with Wolfgang Schaefer @ Linneman's, 9 p.m.

And: Eternium with Warseid and Devolving Messiah @ Frank's Power Plant, 9 p.m.
