Draft Magazine’s Best Beers of 2013
New Glarus gets a well-deserved mention.

Draft puts together some solid beer lists. This year’s list of the top 25 beers of 2013 is no exception. Props to New Glarus for earning a mention with Wild Sour Ale. I have to admit that I wasn’t familiar with a fair amount of brews shown here, but the ones I did try that were on the list made perfect sense. Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA, Founders Doom, Firestone Walker Velvet Merkin and Sixpoint 3Beans all deserved their spots.

Christmas Spirit at Burnhearts

The folks at Burnhearts (2599 S. Logan Ave.) know how to throw a holiday party. On Wednesday, Dec. 18 the Bay View spot hosts Walking in a Winter Hinterland, which starts at 8 p.m. It’s hard to be Scrooge when you’ve got casks of Oak Aged Whiteout Imperial IPA and Coconut Lunatic. The draft list isn’t too bad either and includes Lunatic, White Cap, Winterland, and Bourbon Barrel Stout. Adding to the deliciousness is food from Hinterland (always good stuff). Oh yeah, Creepy Santa will also be there. Naughty and nice are both welcome.

Barley Pop of the Week

I mentioned it briefly last week, but at this time of the year, Lakefront Holiday Spice earns a spot on my regular rotation. The spice and clove flavor combines nicely with the near 10 percent ABV to provide a warming elixir for cold holiday nights. Christmas beers have exploded along with the craft beer market, but Holiday Spice will always hold a spot in my heart.

Quick Taps

The upcoming collaboration between Sierra Nevada and our prized New Glarus is worth looking forward to. Read more about it from Sierra Nevada’s point of view.

In two weeks, I plan on posting my best beers of 2013 list. It’s fun (and slightly astonishing) going through the new beers I tried over the last 12 months.

Events Brewing

Thursday, Dec. 19: Blue’s Egg (317 N. 76th St.) is hosting a beer dinner with Laughing Dog Brewing, a well regarded outfit from Idaho. The fun starts at 6 p.m. and costs $50. Call 414-659-1900 for reservations.

Thursday, Dec. 19: Milwaukee Brewing brings samples to both Discount Liquor Milwaukee (5031 W. Oklahoma Ave.) and Waukesha (919 N. Barstow Ave.) from 4 to 7 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 19: It’s Goose Island night at Romans’ Pub (3475 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.). Mike will be tapping the “sour sisters” Lolita, Juliet, Halia and Gillian as well as a 2012 Bourbon County Stout. I’m thinking that it’s a good idea to get there early.

Friday, Dec. 20: Try Kronenbourg from 4 to 7 p.m. at Discount Liquor Milwaukee.

Friday, Dec. 20: New Glarus brings samples, including the delicious Belgian Red, to Discount Liquor Waukesha from 4 to 7 p.m.

Saturday, Dec. 21: Kronenbourg comes to Discount Liquor Waukesha from noon to 3 p.m.

Saturday, Dec. 21: Try tastes from New Glarus from noon to 3 p.m. at Discount Liquor Milwaukee.
