I grew up on the old Miller Lite ads featuring sports personalities. Here’s an (oddly heartfelt) old Christmas ad from the fellas. You get a gold star if you can name all of these guys.
Generally, the excellent beer tastings at Discount Liquor are listed below. But this week, they’ve got one that deserves special attention. On Thursday from 4-7 p.m., Central Waters comes to Discount Liquor Milwaukee (5031 W. Oklahoma Ave.), and they’re bringing some goodies. Their excellent bourbon barrel stout will be there, but the highlight is the 1414, a 14th anniversary barrel aged stout that’s absolutely delicious and ridiculously tough to come by. Maybe I’m being a homer for the Wisconsin brewery, but I’ve tried 1414 on two occasions, and I really think it compares to Goose Island’s legendary Bourbon County Stout. Get to Discount and find out for yourself.
Barley Pop of the Week
Barrel-aged beers just make sense when the weather turns chilly. Milwaukee Brewing’s Louie’s Resurrection is reason enough to appreciate the coming of winter. The ale is aged for two months in bourbon barrels. The result is a sweeter ale with a hint of oak and bourbon. The subtleness of the bourbon flavor makes it a great choice for those who don’t care for the big (massive, actually) flavor of barrel aged behemoths like Goose Island Bourbon County Stout.
Sprecher is wrapping up production of Citra Bomb IIPA, and it should be showing up soon. They had me at “Citra.”
Check out this interesting list of the best beers in every state. For the record, I prefer the Belgian Red if choosing New Glarus fruit beers. But picking No. 1 in Wisconsin is tough.
