Salons Unite After Azana Tragedy
Plus what you can do to help.

My salon, Carenza, is located directly around the corner from Azana Salon and Spa. Our first day back to work after the shooting, we walked in somberly, giving each other hugs while the shock sunk in.

As we learned of the victims, my heart let out a cry as I realized Zina Haughton competed as a stylist in Milwaukee Magazine's "The Style Games." She joined up on the Azana/Stephanie Horne team to showcase the styling skills of the community.

Alisa Chojnacki, the model pictured below, relates her experience working with Zina on the photo shoot. "Zina's enthusiasm about her work was contagious. She loved what she did, and was excited to share her work with the Milwaukee community," Chojnacki says.

Stephanie Horne, owner of Stephanie Horne Boutique, also commented on her experiences with Zina, as she had been going to her for hair services for more than a year with her children. "Zina was wonderful at what she did, it's why I kept going back! She obviously loved her children, and they were following in her footsteps. Her oldest daughter was working at Azana as an assistant, while her youngest was involved in the arts," Horne says.

When asked if she noticed any signs that Zina was having trouble at home, Horne says, "You would have never known. It's awful. I can't help but think of how many other women out there in which no one has a clue that they are suffering from domestic abuse."

Within days of the shooting, salons around Milwaukee were quick to unite and bring light to a subject so often left in the dark. A purple ribbon campaign has been started to raise money for the Benefit for Azana Salon and Spa. For a small donation, you may purchase a ribbon at more than 80 salons nationally, who will then send the proceeds directly to the fund. Donations can also be dropped off at any Associated Bank location.

Along with the purple ribbon campaign, salons are distributing information about domestic abuse by Cut It Out: Salon's Against Domestic Abuse, which offers information and help to those that need it most.

Please join in supporting our local salons and beauty companies on the very first "Cut it Out" day, which is being held Tuesday, Nov. 13. Five to 25 percent of the day's sales will benefit the Azana Salon and Spa fund.

Along with "Cut it Out" day, 8-Twelve MVP Bar and Grill in Brookfield will hold a benefit for the children of Azana Spa victims today from 5-8 p.m. For$100 per ticket, guests can enjoy a food station, beverages, wine and a silent auction. One hundred percent of the night's proceeds will go directly to this fund. To view more information please visit http://www.8-twelve.com.
