One of these years I’m going to make it to Festival of Wood and Barrel Aged Beer (commonly known as FoBAB). The annual event held by the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild in Chicago offers an incredible array of some of the best and rarest beers on the planet.
FoBAB 2013 took place on Saturday, and Central Waters left with a gold medal. The guys from Amherst claimed first in the Classic Porter/Stout category with the Central Waters Bourbon Barrel Stout.
I’m a believer that Central Waters has one of the best barrel-aging programs in the United States. It’s nice to see the brewery get big-time recognition for its efforts.
Bell’s Brewery took Best of Show honors with Le Bretteur, a wild/sour ale, and Goose Island was the runner up with Bourbon County Backyard Rye (which all but ensures that the Backyard Rye will be an extremely hot commodity on Black Friday when it’s released in Chicago).
I’m all about drinking beer for a good cause. Since last spring, Horny Goat Hideaway (2011 S. First St.) has been using Sunday to raise money for a wide range of charitable organizations. The Goat Gives Back is a program that gives five percent of sales between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. to a charity or community group. Organizations like Habitat for Humanity and the American Cancer Society are just a couple of examples of those who have taken advantage of the program. Well done, Horny Goat.
Barley Pop of the Week
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas (beer season). It’s that time of year when I start sampling holiday brews. Anchor Christmas Ale is like unwrapping a present, the fact that it’s made with a different recipe each year means that you’re not entirely sure what you’re going to get when you open the bottle. The 2013 version is a dark brew that blends spices like nutmeg with dark fruit and nice slight hop bitterness. It’s bottle dose of holiday cheer.
The free food during the Packers/Giants game at Romans Pub on Sunday was “Sloppy Defense Joes.” Gotta love Mike Romans’ sense of humor.
Sounds like there will be big doings at Lakefront Brewery on Black Friday (Nov. 29) again this year. I’ll let you know details next week.
