You might not think of the bar attached to the Wisconsin Cheese Mart when it comes to beer selection, but owner Ken McNulty is doing what he can to make the Uber Tap Room (1048 N. Old World Third St.) a pretty good place to sample beer. The Tap Room recently installed 24 more taps and now has 36 total (including six nitro lines). What’s cool about the wide beer selection is that all but one of the taps are Wisconsin brews. New Glarus, Central Waters, Potosi, Sprecher and Lakefront are all well represented. The pairing of Wisconsin beer with Wisconsin cheese (plenty of samples are available on the menu) is a match made in heaven. Check the hours before you go though. The Uber Tap Room closes at 6 p.m. early in the week and is open until 11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.
Turn to MPTV, yes public television, on Monday night at 8 p.m. to watch the premiere of “Bottoms Up: Wisconsin’s Historic Bars and Breweries.” The one-hour documentary looks at the architecture and social history of bars and breweries in the state. If you want to watch it with friends, head to Best Place Pub, which is hosting a premiere party. The documentary will air again later in the week. Check the schedule for times.
Barley Pop of the Week
My appreciation for the beers made by Lagunitas increases every time I try a new one. The seasonal Brown Shugga’ was recently released by Lagunitas, and it’s another solid effort. The addition of brown sugar gives it a sweet malty taste, but there’s also a nice subtle hop finish that ensures that the sweetness isn’t overwhelming. There’s a slight hint of booze, but Brown Shugga’ is pretty drinkable for a beer with a 9.9 percent ABV. Winter’s right around the corner. Stock up on this bad boy for the cold days ahead.
Sam Adams’ Utopias was recently released. At around $200 a bottle, I don’t think I’ll be trying any, but man am I curious.
Wednesday, Nov. 14: If you’re going to the RNDM show at Turner Hall, get there early to snag a Sixpoint sample being handed out before the concert.
Thursday, Nov. 15: Pair Belgian chocolate with Belgian beer at Palm Tavern (2989 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.) from 5-7 p.m. Try a dark bittersweet ganache or milk chocolate hazelnut truffle, and wash it down with tasty Belgian. Good stuff.
Friday, Nov. 16: Goose Island and Bridgeport Brewing bring samples to Discount Liquor Milwaukee (5031 W. Oklahoma Ave.) from 4-7 p.m.
Friday, Nov. 16: Try New Glarus’ new Serendipity from 4-7 p.m. at Discount Liquor Waukesha (919 N. Barstow Ave.)
Saturday, Nov. 17: New Glarus Serendipity samples from noon to 3 p.m. and a few brews from Potosi Brewing from 3-6 p.m. at Discount Liquor Milwaukee.
Saturday, Nov. 17: Sip Goose Island samples from noon to 3 p.m. and try Guinness Black Lager from 3-5 p.m. at Discount Liquor Waukesha.
